Does a Photovoltaic Installation Require Lightning Protection?
Does a Photovoltaic Installation Require Lightning Protection? Here’s What the Standards Say
If a lightning protection system is required, photovoltaic (PV) panels must be properly protected against direct lightning strikes.
Although the PN-EN 62305-3:2011 standard provides certain exceptions to the use of lightning protection, PV panels unfortunately do not meet the conditions that would allow these exemptions to apply.
What does this mean in practice?
👉 Even if the required separation distance is not maintained, the use of air-termination rods (lightning masts) is recommended – they help protect the installation from direct lightning strikes.
👉 Additionally, surge protective devices (SPDs) safeguard the system against the effects of overvoltage.
💡 Remember: well-designed protection is not just about compliance with standards—it’s primarily about the safety of your installation and the entire building.
